Dundee United substitute Nicky Clark snatched a stoppage-time
It looked like an early header from Tony Watt would be enough to end the visitors' long winless run in the Scottish
Premiership.
However, Clark put away a 92nd-minute shot to make sure United stay fifth.
And only a good save from Trevor Carson prevented Adrian Sporle adding a winner for Micky Mellon's side.
It was a kick in the teeth for Motherwell, who have now gone seven league games without a win, and find
themselves five points worse off than they were on Christmas Day.
That's because 3-0 victories awarded at the beginning of December after Covid regulation breaches by St Mirren
and Kilmarnock have been "suspended pending appeals".
The sudden subtraction of six points and six goals resulted in Motherwell tumbling from sixth to 10th, with this
draw nudging them back up to ninth.
The opening goal came on nine minutes and Watt will not have scored many easier as the United defence dozed
off at a corner, allowing the striker a free header from six yards.
Allan Campbell looped a header just over following another lapse at the back from United, while Stephen
O'Donnell's neat finish was disallowed for a tight offside.
Carson returned to the Motherwell side after two months out and the goalkeeper showed no signs of rust when
he turned a firm shot from Jeando Fuchs onto a post in what was United's only bright moment of the first half.
Motherwell were so close to doubling their lead when Callum Lang nipped in ahead of goalkeeper Benjamin
Siegrist at the front post to turn a close-range shot from a tight angle on target. It hit the heel of Liam Smith,
who knew nothing about it, and a panicked clearance cannoned away off Watt.
The lively Lang then dragged a shot narrowly wide from 20 yards, while his attempted lob was gathered by
Siegrist following a botched kick from the keeper.
